2000: For the first time, the State recognizes indigenous rights thanks to the Revolution

On July 21, 2000, Commander Hugo Chávez from Bolivar State signed an Agreement of Understanding with more than 50 representatives of the indigenous peoples, including the Kariña, Pemón and Arawako.

This action by Commander Chávez became the first time that the Venezuelan State recognized the rights of indigenous peoples.

This document establishes the beginning of the process of titling and demarcating indigenous habitats in accordance with the transitional provisions of the Bolivarian Constitution of Venezuela.
