December 13, 1994, the world witnessed a historic meeting of two unparalleled revolutionary leaders, Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro, who met for the first time in Havana, Cuba, after the civic military rebellion of 1992 and that memorable “for now” that changed the course of Venezuelan politics.

Commander Chávez arrived that night on a commercial flight waiting for him. Commander Castro greeted him with an effusive embrace that became the beginning of a new era of hope for the peoples of the region.

“I think ALBA started with that embrace, I had no idea that I was going to see Fidel. When we landed I saw out the window that there were lights and what I thought was that Eusebio (Leal) was waiting for me, because he was the one who had invited me to give a lecture at Casa Simón Bolívar. Then, they call me from the booth and when I go, Angelito appears, as a protocol, greets me, welcomes me to Cuba and tells me that they are waiting for me,” said Commander Chávez.

Both leaders held an extensive talk until the wee hours of the morning, and took a tour of the Palace of the Revolution and Military Academy in the Caribbean country.

29 years after this revolutionary meeting, Venezuela and Cuba continue to walk the path of anti-imperialist justice traced by both Revolutionary Giants.
