On October 27, 1965, the body of the leftist professor and politician, Alberto Lovera, was found on a beach in Lecherías, Anzoátegui state. The corpse had its arms and legs shackled and a brickwork beak tied around its neck.During the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez, he played an active role in the resistance. He participated in the management of the 1952 oil strike and in numerous clandestine actions. During the sixties, he was responsible for the General Secretariat of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) in Caracas, and was a member of the Political Bureau of that party.
Alberto Lovera was trained as a leader of oil workers in the state of Zulia and in his youth he participated in the founding congress of the Communist Youth in 1947, joining the first central council of that organization.
On October 18, 1965, at approximately 6 in the afternoon, Lovera was arrested in front of the Plaza de Las Tres Gracias by DIGEPOL officials, and transferred to that police facility in Los Chaguaramos, Caracas, where he was seen by other prisoners. Once dead, the armed band of Democratic Action (AD) tried to dispose of the body by taking it to several military installations, including the San Carlos Barracks and the Cachito Camp, where it was rejected. In the end, the gang decided to throw him into the sea on the beaches of Anzoátegui, where he was located by a fisherman.
The information that led to the arrest and death of Lovera was provided by the whistleblower Aníbal González, a policeman who infiltrated the ranks of the PCV. Months later, he died at the hands of DIGEPOL agents to shut his mouth. The investigations that made it possible to discover the most horrible crime committed during the AD governments were due to the tireless work of his widow María del Mar de Lovera and to the courageous complaints of the then deputy José Vicente Rangel.
