This Sunday marked the 60th anniversary of the disastrous coup against the president of Brazil, then Joao Goulart, which occurred on March 31, 1964.

The overthrow of the progressive government of Goulart, by the military leadership and through the business classes, with the support of media corporations and under the protective mantle of Operation Condor, sponsored by the United States, gave way to the establishment of one of the most ignominious dictatorships that shook Brazil during the period between 1964 and 1985. A 21-year tyranny was implanted with more than 30,000 dead and missing.

The Brazilian Congress of the time, protected by business factors, played an anti-democratic role contrary to national interests, validating with fallacious arguments the flagrant violation of the Constitution of the South American country, condemning the Brazilian people to the bloodiest tortures, disappearances and massive violations of their human rights.

Today, the Peoples of South America reject any act that threatens democracy.
