On November 20, 1817, the Liberator Simon Bolivar ordered by decree the incorporation of an eighth star in the national flag of Venezuela, which represented the newly liberated province of Guayana, a large territory made up of the current states of Amazonas, Bolívar and Delta Amacuro.

With this measure, the Liberator recognized the great value that this region of the country had in promoting independence and the irrepressible demoralization of the realist army.

After the disintegration of Gran Colombia, the Venezuelan flag returned with only 7 stars, and it wasn't until 2006 that Commander Hugo Chávez Frías reinstated and enforced the Bolivar decree of 1817 and the Eighth Star was reincorporated into the National Pavilion.
