15 Caribbean States would demand 200 billion British pounds from the United Kingdom in reparation for the slave trade; the request is expected to be on the agenda of the next Commonwealth Summit, which will take place on October 21 in Samoa.

The British newspaper Daily Mail described as deliberate the initiative taken by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, who recently stated before the United Nations General Assembly that reparations for slavery and colonialism should be part of a new “global restoration”.

The island of Samoa broke ties with the monarchy and was constituted as a Republic three years ago. The billion dollar figure cited by the Daily was mentioned for the first time by UN judge Patrick Robinson.

Robinson said she was even underestimated by the magnitude of the damage caused by the slave trade: “once a State has committed a wrongful act, it is obliged to pay reparations.”
