On September 5, 2010, after the 400th anniversary of Santo Cristo de La Grita, the Leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, Hugo Chávez, declared a National Monument and Cultural Heritage to the Minor Basilica of the Holy Spirit and Sanctuary of Santo Cristo de la Grita, in the state of Táchira.

Commander Chávez, after touring the towns of La Fria and Soboruco in the Andean entity, stopped at La Grita to share with its inhabitants, this meeting served as a framework for the signing of the decree establishing the Santo Cristo de La Grita as a national monument.

The document contemplates that no repair, restoration or change work may be carried out that distorts and denaturalizes the original meaning and concept and of the elements that make up its environment or surrounding area, among other provisions that seek to preserve the history of this religious site.

“The Holy Christ of La Grita is a Venezuelan Christ,” he said. At that time, the Commander asked Cristo de La Grita to calm the hatred of sectors of society that opposed the Bolivarian Revolution.

Also known as The Holy Christ of Miracles and the Christ with the Serene Face, it rests in the Chapel of the Holy Christ of the Basilica of the Holy Spirit, located in front of Plaza Bolívar in the city of La Grita.
