On August 1, 2012, the fencer Rubén Limardo managed to beat Venezuela's sporting history, winning the gold medal in the individual sword event at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In the competition, the Venezuelan faced the Norwegian Bartosz Piasecki, defeating him 15-10. It took 44 years for a Venezuelan to win back a gold medal, since the boxer Francisco “Morochito” Rodríguez won the gold medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, in the “mini-fly” category.

On that occasion, Limardo dedicated the victory to his deceased mother and stressed that he arrived in London with the sole idea of bringing a medal to the country. “I came to look for the fifth round here and I succeeded, I came to look for the medal and here it is (...) I said it, my dream is to be an Olympic champion and I succeeded, I dedicate this victory to all of Venezuela,” he said then.
