Minister Jiménez: Venezuelan scientists make progress in stem cell treatments

The Sectorial Vice President of Science, Technology, Education and Health, Gabriela Jiménez, pointed out that at the level of scientific and technical research, currently Venezuela with the Center for Regenerative Medicine and the Stem Cell Production Laboratory, “which allows us to have the culture of preserved human cells to treat patients with various conditions.”

“What we produce in the laboratory is accompanied by different types of cells, which will make dental pulp to recover the nerve through the patients' mouths; cells that constitute cartilage, bone tissue and also for the epithelium,” he explained.

During the Science segment, of the Con Maduro+ program, conducted by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, he showed the case of three young Venezuelan athletes who received totally free bone cell treatments, while in other countries an equivalent intervention amounts to more than 20 thousand dollars.

For his part, the head of the Cell Therapy Unit of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), José Cardier, said that thanks to stem cell treatment, it was possible to “treat the case of several children and adults with congenital diseases, bone regeneration, cartilage, skin, regenerative and corneal dentists.”

In addition, the director of the IVIC, José Quintero, reported that more than 120 patients from different regions of the country have been treated with stem cells, and mentioned that experts are working to extend the regenerative therapeutic medicine service in more hospitals in Venezuela.
