The capital of Saudi Arabia hosts for two days a special meeting of the World Economic Forum focusing on the situation in the Gaza Strip and tensions in the Middle East.

The President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, arrived the day before in the city of Riyadh to participate in the meeting at the invitation of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman.

During his participation in the meeting, President Abbas is expected to meet with several heads of state, leaders and political leaders from various countries around the world.

The list of participants in this summit includes the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, and diplomats involved in the truce negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

The senior U.S. official is expected to arrive in the Saudi capital next Monday to address efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that would allow the release of hostages, the State Department said on Saturday.

The Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip has caused more than 34,000 deaths since October 7 in Palestinian territory, according to the Gazan Ministry of Health.

After weeks of stalemate in negotiations, Hamas announced on Saturday that it was studying an Israeli counterproposal for a possible truce in the Gaza Strip that would allow the release of hostages.

Although Israel is not present and negotiations mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States are taking place elsewhere, the meeting in Riyadh will be an opportunity to hold talks with key players, said the president of the World Economic Forum, Borge Brenda.
